An Nur Learning Acadmey Outreach- 7/2/25
Description of Outreach:
Two sessions, one from 12:30 to 1:30 and another from 2:00 - 3:00
Students were mainly preschoolers and early elementary school kids, approximately 15 kids in the first one and 10 kids in the second session.
Description of Activities:
Started with a ~15-20 minute talk:
Brief intro about outreach team (Keith/Khushee), Team Inspiration: ~3 mins
Reviewed Mindstorm and Robocars, used a human to robot analogy to make learning more digestible:
Brain as computer, wires as nervous system, wheels as legs, depth sensor as touch, antenna as hearing, energy as voltage, etc.
Split into two groups, around ½ to ⅔ went with Khushee to do the Mindstorms (pre-programmed sumo bot), others went with Keith to do camera demonstration:
Students completed two main activities at the Mindstorms station. First,the students role played as robots and programmers, and had to navigate to make a square. This taught them the concept of logical thinking. Second, students were given free time to run the different programs on the Mindstorm robots.
Camera demonstration was with Robocar Oak-D Pro Wide (USB-C PWR cable with USB-C to USB-A cable to plug into local computer) and DepthAI viewer, showed the color cam, heat cam, point-cloud, etc.
Lessons Learned:
Main thing with this age group in all seriousness is moving things and bright lights, but some of the kids especially in the older age group were engaged/interested in the talk itself
Recommendations for future years: FLL robots with some sort of FTC robot to move around, with another Oak-D camera (not with RoboCar) for demo.
Students were most engaged with the lands on learning activities
